How to Decorate a Harry Potter Cake

Updated July 20, 2017

There are many ways a Harry Potter-themed cake can be decorated. Themes from both the films and the novels can be incorporated on the cake. Sure, it may be easier to order a Harry Potter-themed cake from a professional baker, but it is cheaper and more meaningful if you do your own decorating. The main colours on the cake in these steps are yellow and maroon, the school colours of Hogwarts, the fictional witchcraft school Harry Potter attends. Harry Potter character figurines are low-priced and sold in many department stores.

Spread the yellow frosting on the sides of the cake with the icing spatula. Frost one half of the top of the cake with yellow frosting and the second half with maroon frosting.

Fill the icing piping bag with maroon frosting and place the icing piping tip on the tip of the bag. Pipe a line of maroon frosting around the bottom perimeter of the cake. Do the same for the top perimeter of the cake.

Place the wand and the round glasses on the yellow side of the cake. Add Harry Potter character figurines on the maroon side of the cake.

Fill the second icing bag with yellow icing. On the maroon half on the top of the cake write the letters H and P. Each letter should be about 7.5cm / 3 inches high.
