If you get your exercise by walking, investing in a pedometer may be prudent. A pedometer is a portable electronic instrument that counts the number of steps a person takes. A person using a pedometer will typically attach it to his leg, either near the foot or the hip. Most, but not all, pedometers will automatically calculate the distance a person has walked. If your pedometer does not automatically calculate the distance you have walked, or you wish to manually calculate the number of steps it takes for you to walk a mile, you can do so.
Determine the length in feet of your stride. Using a tape measure, mark off a distance of 30 feet in your house. Using a normal walking stride, count the number of steps it takes for you to walk 30 feet. To calculate the length of your stride, divide 30 by the steps it took for you to walk 30 feet. For instance, if it takes you 12 steps to walk 30 feet, your stride length is 30 feet divided by 12 steps, or 2.5 feet per step.
Calculate how many steps it takes for you to walk a mile. There are 5,280 feet in a mile. To calculate how many steps it takes for you to walk a mile, divide the number of feet in a mile by the length in feet of your stride. Using the previous example, if your stride length is 2.5 feet per step, the number of steps in a mile for you is 5,280 divided by 2.5, or 2,112 steps.
Divide the steps you took by the steps it takes for you to walk a mile. If your pedometer only indicates the number of steps you walk, divide the steps you have walked into the steps it takes for you to walk a mile. If your pedometer indicates that you have walked 9,200 steps, and it takes you 2,112 steps to walk a mile, then you have walked 9,200 divided by 2,112, or about 4.36 miles.
