Whether you have got a costume event or a special evening planned, adding a corset top to your wardrobe will really kick it up a notch. Learn how to make a corset easily by using a basic T-shirt as your foundation for the garment; the T-shirt will give you the shape and structure that you need in order to begin the project, and with some creative cutting and embellishing you can make the corset truly your own.

Instructions

  1. 1

Lay a T-shirt out flat on a table. Cut off the sleeves inside the seams, and remove the neckband. Cut out the front layer of the T-shirt in a U shape to lower the neckline even further.

  2. 2

Turn the T-shirt inside out and put it on. Pinch the fabric on either side of the shirt to make it fit against your body shape tightly. Use pins to pin the two layers of fabric together on the sides, making a vertical line of pins that outlines the curves of your figure.

  3. 3

Carefully take the shirt off your body. Sew a seam just inside the line of straight pins that you made, either using a straight stitch with hand sewing or a straight stitch line for your sewing machine. Remove the pins and cut off the excess fabric outside of the seam, then go back over the raw edges of the fabric and whipstitch by hand or sew over it with a zigzag or serger stitch to stabilise the seam.

  4. 4

Turn the shirt right side out and cut straight up the centre front, from the bottom hem to the centre of the neckline.

  5. 5

Use the grommet or eyelet tool to put eyelets in the front of the corset top. Line up your eyelets on either side of the cut you made in step four, spacing them approximately one inch apart vertically and approximately 1.2 cm (1/2 inch) in from the cut edge of the shirt.

  6. 6

Cut a length of lacing or ribbon that is twice the length of your T-shirt height. Starting at the bottom of the shirt near the hem. Poke the lacing through the bottom two eyelets so that the ends of the laces come out of the front of the shirt and the centre of the lacing is positioned inside of the shirt. Criss-cross the laces and lace up the front of the corset like you would lace a shoe. Put on the corset top, tighten the laces and tie a bow at the top.
