How to Paint a Wheelbarrow

Updated February 21, 2017

A fresh coat of paint can liven up an old wheelbarrow to be used around your yard or as a decorative fixture in your garden. Painting your wheelbarrow is a task that can be completed in a few hours. Depending on what you are using it for, you can decorate it with designs of your choice or just choose a simple one colour paint job.

Rinse the wheelbarrow with water. Use a mild soap if it necessary.

Dry the wheelbarrow with a lint-free cloth.

Apply a base paint to your paintbrush. You may choose any colour you desire.

Paint the inside and outside of the barrow completely, using the base paint. Depending on the colour, you may need to apply more than one coat of paint. If you would like to add designs, you may do so once the base coat dries.

Allow the base paint to air dry.

Apply a coat of outdoor varnish to the barrow, to seal it, using a new paintbrush.

Allow the barrow to air dry.
