How to Make a Mary Costume
Mary is considered one of the holiest women in the Christian religion. (praying Mary image by Ivonne Wierink from Fotolia.com)

Whether you are making the Mary costume as a part of a nativity scene, a Christmas party or a Halloween costume, several key elements make the wearer recognisable as the Mary of the Christian Bible. Use items of clothing you already have in your own home or make a few small purchases at a local craft or vintage store to complete the costume effectively and in a budget-friendly manner.

Instructions

  1. 1

Dress the wearer in an ankle-length white dress or nightgown.

  2. 2

Place a blue hooded bathrobe over the dress or nightgown. Blue is the most common colour seen on depictions of Mary. Using a blue bathrobe will help identify her as the biblical Mary, mother of Jesus.

  3. 3

Cut a strip of brown fabric 2 inches wide and 1 yard long. Tie the fabric around the waist of the wearer, over the robe and dress.

  4. 4

Dress in plain brown flat sandals to complete the ensemble.

  1. 1

Dress the wearer in an ankle-length white dress or nightgown.

  2. 2

Cut a strip of blue fabric 2 inches thick and 1 yard long. Tie it around the waist, over the white dress of the wearer.

  3. 3

Measure the height of the wearer. Cut a piece of blue fabric as tall as the wearer and 1 yard wide. Leave the top and bottom of the fabric flat and straight, but trim the sides so they form a curved and rounded shape.

  4. 4

Pin the top, flat edge of the fabric around the back and side of the collar of the dress to hold it in place. The fabric should drape around the wearer's shoulders. Poke a hole in the edges of the fabric that falls next to the wearer's wrists. Cut two small strips, approximately 6 inches long, out of another piece of the blue fabric. Thread the strips through the holes and tie them around the wearer's wrists. This will help keep the fabric wrapped around her.

  5. 5

Drape a white or blue scarf over the crown of the wearer's head and secure it in place with hair clips. Add a pair of plain brown flat sandals to complete the ensemble.
