Personalising your theme in the Nintendo DS is like setting your favourite wallpaper on the computer. There will be no significant changes regarding your device's operation, but it will make boring menu-browsing tasks more enjoyable. If you are tired of the preset Nintendo DS themes, just follow a simple download and installation procedure and in a matter of minutes, your favourite themes will be on the screen of your portable device.

Make sure you have the "R4" or "CycloDS Evolution" flash card on your Nintendo DS, preferably the former, otherwise you won't be able to complete these steps without a problem.
Visit a website providing customised Nintendo DS themes for download. "NintendoDS Theme" and "NDStheme" (see Resources) are popular choices, offering dozens of themes to choose from. Choose one and begin the download.
Decompress the downloaded file, using WinRar or a similar program. Ensure there are four images and a "Configuration Settings" (.ini) file. Keep them all under a common folder.
Connect your Nintendo DS on your computer, either using a USB cable or by removing its flash card and inserting it on the computer, if there is the appropriate port. On the flash card window, double-click on the "Systems" folder and then on "Themes." Paste your newly downloaded file along with the existing preset themes.
Disconnect your Nintendo DS and boot it. On the main menu, press the select button and choose your custom theme. From now on, it will appear any time you browse your device's menu.

- Apart from the ready-made custom themes, you can create one by yourself from scratch. You can either do it using Microsoft's Paint or with the "R4 Theme Creator Alice" application, which provides step-by-step instructions to help you start creating your own personal themes.
