Emoticons are images on chat software that recreate the look or emotion of a particular mood, face or object. Some chat messengers, like MSN or Trillian have a beer glass emoticon you can send to friends. However, AIM does not come with an emoticon for a beer glass. Making a beer glass emoticon requires creating a simulated beer glass using a combination of typed symbols on your keyboard. The symbols must be entered in a precise order or your image will look incorrect or lopsided.

Instructions

    Simple Beer Glass

  1. 1

Open up a chat session with a friend. Type everything that follows in the chat window.

  2. 2

Press the "\" button located above the enter key. This creates the left side of your beer glass.

  3. 3

Hold shift and press the "~" button located above the tab button and to the left of the "1" button in your number row. Your image will now look like "\~" without the quotes.

  4. 4

Finish your beer glass by pressing the "/" key, which is located next to your left shift button. Your finished image will now look like this "\~/" without the quotes.

  5. 5

Remove the "~" from your beer glass to create an empty glass. Instead, hold shift and press the "_" button, located between the "0" key and the "+" key on top of your keyboard. This will create a glass that looks like this "_/" without the quotes.

    Complex Glass

  1. 1

Press the "_" button on your keyboard two times to create the top of your beer glass. Hold shift and press enter to add a new line to your message without sending it.

  2. 2

Hold shift and press the "|" button, which is underneath your "backspace" key. This will create your left side of the beer glass. Press space bar until your cursor is underneath the right end of the top of the beer mug. Make another "|" line to make the right side. Press the same button without holding shift to make a "\" line. This makes the top of your handle.

  3. 3

Repeat the above step for one more row, but add a "_" line and a space between the sides to create your glass bottom. You should also press the "/" button instead of the "\" button to finish your handle. Press enter to send your glass.
