You run fuel stabiliser through your motor before you shut down for the winter, but a considerable amount of fuel stays trapped in the float chamber, even if you remove the fuel line from the tank and run the motor "dry" while spraying fogging oil into the carburettor. Unfortunately, even stabilised fuel may sour, so the only way to guarantee removing all fuel is to physically drain the carburettors from the float bowls. This means you have to put the float back in and check it with a gauge available only from Evinrude.

Turn the carburettor right-side up and set the float into it's mounting. Push the hinge pin into place with an awl.
Turn the carburettor upside down, so that the gasket surface of the float bowl is horizontal, and the float valve is closed by the weight of the float only. Set the float gauge across the float bowl, touching the gasket surfaces on both sides. The float should fit into the cutout on the gauge. Use the cutout on the float gauge marked "9.9 & 15" for 15-horsepower and smaller motors and the notch marked "25 THRU 75 HP" for larger motors.
Turn the carburettor right-side-up and measure the distance between the bottom lip of the carburettor body and the lowest corner of the float, on the side of the float opposite the hinge, with a machinist's ruler. For 15-horsepower and smaller motors, this measurement must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches. For 25hp and larger motors, it must be between 1 1/8 inches and 1 5/8 inches. If you need to adjust the float, bend the tab on the float arm where it contacts the float seat without forcing the float needle valve into the seat.
