The MKIV navigation system comes installed in your BMW vehicle. This computer system provides you with points of interest and turn-by-turn directions. You need to keep your system upgraded once a year, as recommended by BMW. With an upgrade, your navigation system will have the latest maps and locations. To upgrade your system, you need to obtain a navigation disc from your BMW dealership.

    Find the right disc for your BMW vehicle. Cars made before 2002 use CD discs, while cars made after 2002 have DVD-based maps.

    Contact your local BMW dealer. Order the latest CD or DVD for your BMW.

    Push the "Open" button on the GPS unit. Wait for the system to eject the old CD or DVD. Remove the disc from the slot.

    Slide the new disc into the slot. Your system will accept the disc and upgrade to it automatically.
