Wire picture holders are a unique way to display photographs and memo holders. They are easy to make using a variety of objects around your house. Those who like to reduce their household waste might appreciate this project because it allows you to recycle old objects into a functional work of art. You can customise them with your choice of decorative items and display pictures, post cards, important notes and more. These fun picture holders are the perfect gift solution if you are on a budget. This is also a simple enough craft project to try with small kids.

Instructions

  1. 1

Determine the height you would like for your picture holder, then add about 8 inches and cut that length of wire. Eighteen-gauge wire works well, but you may feel free to use whatever you have on hand.

  2. 2

Place a bead over one end of the wire, and hold it in place with needle nose pliers.

  3. 3

Bend the bead over and curl the wire slightly to hold the bead into place.

  4. 4

Bend the end of the wire to create three or four coils, using a fat marker or similar object as a guide, if desired.

  5. 5

Slide a few beads or your choice of decorative item onto the opposite end of the wire, and flip it over so the beads fall into place at the base of the coil.

  6. 6

Kink the wire with pliers or create a tiny coil to hold the beads in place.

  7. 7

Create a base to support the photo stand by wrapping the bottom end around a small decorated stone or sticking it into any item with holes in it, such as an old thread spool, salt shaker or a vase.

  8. 8

Form a self-supporting stand by bending the wire at a right angle about 6 to 8 inches from the end of the wire and then using a jar or bottle to form a large circle. Once the large circle is formed, bend another right angle about 3 inches long in toward the centre of the circle.

  9. 9

Stand the picture holder on its base and place pictures, postcards or memos between the coils. The coils work like paper clips to hold the objects in place.

Tips and warnings

  • The length of wire you need varies depending on the desired height, number of coils and the type of base you choose. Start with more wire than you think you'll need, and trim off the excess from the end when you're finished.
  • Feel free to experiment with different decorations or coiling the wire in different ways. For example, you could tie ribbon around the photo holder or create a small coil that extends up the entire length of the shaft.
