How to make chinese coolie hats

Updated April 17, 2017

Keep cool and shaded with a Chinese coolie hat. Coolie hats originated in South East Asia and are traditionally made of natural materials such as bamboo or straw. These hats were designed to shield Asian field workers from the sun and rain while they worked outside. You can make your own version of a Chinese coolie hat with just a few simple supplies that you can get from your local craft store.

Use a large mixing bowl as a template and draw around it on your poster paper using a pencil. This should leave you with a large circle on your paper.

Cut out the circle using your scissors. You will also want to cut out a large triangle with the point of the triangle set in the centre of the circle. The section you cut out will look like a large pizza pie slice.

Decorate your hat. Activity Village suggests using a gold pen or paint to colour the middle of the hat and using Chinese calligraphy characters to decorate the hat.

Curve the edges of the hat together to form a wide cone shape. Use glue to secure the edges.

Add a thin rope or string by stapling two pieces of string to either side of the interior of the hat. This is so that you can tie the hat on while wearing it.
