If you want to make and decorate your own jewellery rings, you will need different kinds of ring blanks for different ring-making techniques. There are different ways to make your own ring blanks, but one of the easiest materials to use is polymer clay, or oven bake clay. You will need a few special tools to create ring blanks that fit right, and you will need to design them so that you will be able to decorate them the way you want.

  1. 1

Rub some vegetable oil around a ring mandrel so your oven bake clay won't stick to it. A ring mandrel is a long, tapered tool used to measure ring sizes correctly. Wrap a 2mm thick, 1/4 inch wide strip of oven bake clay around the ring mandrel at the size you want. Cut the end of the clay so that it overlaps the other end about 1/4 inch.

  2. 2

Remove the clay from the mandrel and press the two ends together gently, just enough so that the two ends bond together and without warping the size and shape of the ring base. This is the basic form of your ring base.

  3. 3

Flatten a piece of oven bake clay to about 3 or 4mm and use a knife to cut a square, rectangle or circle out of the clay. Press one of these flat shapes against the top of your ring base if you want to glue cabochons (flat-back beads) or flat-back rhinestones to the ring base to decorate it. Press a solid shape into the clay shape so that you can fill the inside with glitter, a small photo and clear resin.

  4. 4

Poke a series of 2mm wide holes through the top, or the side of the ring base that you designate as the top, with a thick sewing needle. You need to add holes to the top of a ring base to create beaded rings with wire. You can also use the needle to carve out a filigree design in the top of the ring base.

  5. 5

Spray non-stick cooking spray onto a baking tray and bake the ring blanks in a conventional oven at the temperature and the amount of time specified on the instructions for your polymer clay. After the time is up, remove the pan from the oven with an oven glove and wait at least 45 minutes before beginning to decorate the ring blanks.

Tips and warnings

  • Use metallic coloured oven bake clay to make fake precious metal ring blanks.
