BioWare's "Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords" is a sequel to the award-winning "Knights of the Old Republic" Star Wars role playing game. Released in 2005, KotOR II was compatible with Windows 98 and had no compatibility issues with Microsoft NT-based operating systems such as Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Upon the release of Windows Vista, however, many KotOR II players found themselves unable to enjoy their game due to crashes and other incompatibilities.

Instructions

  1. 1

Install Microsoft's DirectX 9.0c runtime. Windows Vista uses DirectX 10, which offers backwards compatibility with DirectX 9 but may not be fully compatible with some older games. Installing a copy of DirectX 9.0c in addition to DirectX 10 ensures that KotOR II won't experience problems because of DirectX incompatibility.

  2. 2

Insert the installation disc for KotOR II in your computer's CD or DVD drive, cancelling the "AutoPlay" window when it opens. Open Windows Explorer by clicking the "Computer" entry in the Vista "Start" menu.

  3. 3

Double-click the CD or DVD drive where the KotOR installation disc is located and then click the file named "setup.exe" once to select it. Right-click the file and choose "Properties" from the right-click context menu that appears. A new window will open containing the file properties of "setup.exe."

  4. 4

Click the "Compatibility" tab to view the compatibility options for "setup.exe." Mark the option to run the program in "Compatibility Mode", choosing "Windows XP" as the compatibility mode type. Mark the option to run the program as an administrator as well. Click the "Apply" button to apply the changes and then click "OK" to close the "Properties" window.

  5. 5

Double-click "setup.exe" to run it and install KotOR II as you normally would. The program will run with administrator privileges in Windows XP-compatibility mode, eliminating installation problems that may otherwise occur with Windows Vista.

  6. 6

Copy the patched file "mss32.dll" from the KotOR II Vista fix to your KotOR II installation directory. When a message appears asking what action you want to take with the file, choose the "Move and Replace" option to overwrite the existing "mss32.dll" file.

  7. 7

Open your KotOR II directory and locate the file named "swkotor2.exe." Click the file to select it and then right-click it and select "Create Shortcut" from the context menu. Rename the shortcut if you wish.

  8. 8

Select the shortcut you created and right-click it, choosing "Properties" from the context menu. Set the compatibility mode for the shortcut to Windows XP as you did with "setup.exe" previously and set the shortcut to run as an administrator. Click "Apply" and then click "OK" after making these changes. Use this shortcut to launch the game so that it runs properly on Windows Vista.
