If you are putting together a costume for Halloween, for a school play or for a presentation, you do not need to buy expensive costume accessories from a costume shop. You can make some accessories, such as a hat, at home using a few craft materials, such as paper mache and newspaper. With these materials, you can make a hat that is created to perfectly match the costume you are going to wear for your event.

Instructions

  1. 1

Mix together 3 cups of paper mache pulp and 3 cups of water in a bowl.

  2. 2

Let the pulp and water sit for 20 minutes.

  3. 3

Cut pieces of newspaper into strips that measure about 1 inch wide and 4 inches long.

  4. 4

Blow up a large, round balloon, and tie a knot into the end.

  5. 5

Coat the newspaper strips in the paper mache pulp, and lay the soaked strips over the top half of the balloon.

  6. 6

Continue covering the top half of the balloon with paper mache strips until it is four layers thick. Let the paper mache balloon dry.

  7. 7

Pop the balloon with the pin, and remove the popped balloon from the paper mache shell.

  8. 8

Trim the edge of the hat to make the edge smooth.

  9. 9

Paint and decorate the hat using acrylic paint, glitter glue, feathers, sequins and plastic jewels.
