How to mitre cut molding
A mitre saw gives you many different angles to cut your wood. (Hemera Technologies/ Images)

There are two basic ways you can cut a precision angle in moulding with a mitre saw. You can use the traditional way with a wooden mitre box and a backsaw or you can go modern and use an electric mitre saw. The traditional method produces less dust but usually gives you a limited amount of angles. Using a power tool produces slightly more dust but gives you an infinite number of cutting angles from which to choose.

    Wooden Mitre Box

  1. 1

Lay the moulding flat in the wooden mitre box and line the wood up where you want to make your mitre cut. Most wooden mitre boxes have a 45-degree angle cut into it or a 90-degree angle.

  2. 2

Press the moulding tight against the back fence and place the backsaw into the 45-degree or 90-degree slot.

  3. 3

Hold the moulding in place while you saw the moulding in half. The saw cuts on the backstroke and not when you push forward.

    Modern Mitre Saw

  1. 1

Rotate the saw blade to the desired angle and then lock the saw blade in place. This process is different for every brand of electric mitre saw. However, most mitre saws have a radius gauge on the front that shows you what angle you will cut your moulding.

  2. 2

Line the moulding up with the slot on the mitre saw table. The slot is the hole in which the blade goes into when you lower it.

  3. 3

Hold the moulding against the back fence, press the trigger on the saw blade and lower the blade into the moulding to cut it.

  4. 4

Let off the trigger, allow the blade to stop and then pull the saw blade upward.
