How to Send Best Wishes to a Couple Getting Married
A handwritten letter is one way to send your best wishes to an engaged couple. (stationery image by Joyce Wilkes from Fotolia.com)

Celebrate the wedding of friends or loved ones by sending them a tangible expression of your goodwill. You can congratulate them in person if you attend the engagement party, a bridal shower or the wedding itself, but a face-to-face meeting is not always practical. Even if it is, a written message is a nice touch. It can be preserved in their wedding day scrapbook, which is not true of a phone call or e-mail message.

Write on a sheet of stationery something like: "Dear John and Jane, I was so pleased to learn about your engagement, I wanted to write to give you my very best wishes for your upcoming wedding. I read this quote from Vita Sackville-West and thought of you two: 'There is nothing more lovely in life than the union of two people whose love for one another has grown through the years, from the small acorn of passion, into a great rooted tree.' My wish for you is that your marriage will grow into a mighty oak forest! Love, and best wishes."

Tips and warnings

  • If you know the couple's honeymoon destination, select a postcard featuring that spot. If you live in different towns, send them a postcard that showcases your home city. Otherwise, select a postcard that shows a loving couple, candlelight, a sunset or another romantic scene.
  • Ask at your local post office about delivery times and methods if you want to time your card or letter to arrive on a particular day.
  • If you are sending your best wishes to a couple who has already got married, address them "To Mr. and Mrs. John Doe" (or Mr. John Doe and Ms. Jane Smith, if you know that the bride is keeping her own name) at their new address.
