Many meals can be made with or served with tortillas. Whether you make your own or are trying to heat up store-bought tortillas, a handmade tortilla warmer could be a welcome addition to your kitchen. Tortilla warmers are fairly simple to make if you know how to sew. Also, they take few items to make and can be put together quickly. By making a handmade item, you can design your tortilla warmer to match your kitchen or a friend or relative's kitchen, if you are planning on giving it as a gift.

Using the compass and paper, cut a 12 1/2-inch diameter circle on one sheet of paper and cut an 11 3/4-inch diameter circle on a separate piece of paper. Use these two circles as patterns in cutting four of the larger circles from your fabric and two of the smaller circles of the batting. Press the wrinkles out of the fabric.

Separate the four fabric circles into sets of two. With right sides together, sew two circles together with one piece of cotton batting, leaving 3/4 inch open. Turn the piece right side out by folding it inward, and use a slip stitch to finish sewing the piece closed. Do the same with the second set of circles and piece of batting. Press both finished circles.

Sew the outer edge. Take a finished circle and add a seam about 1/2 inch inside the outer edge of the circle. Try using a coordinating fabric that will stand out on the project. Add this seam to approximately one-third of the entire diameter of the circle. Repeat on the second circle.

Put them together. Using straight pins, attach the two circles with the outer sewn seams lined up. With the same coordinating thread, sew the two circles together for the remaining two-thirds of the circle. The majority of the circles need to be sewn together in order to hold the moisture inside the tortilla warmer when it is in use in the microwave.

Trim excess thread. Turn the tortilla warmer inside and out to make sure there are not any lingering threads. Make sure all the seams are secure and closed. Press if needed.

Tips and warnings

  • Cotton fabric and batting is considered safe for microwave use.
  • A thinner batting will make the tortilla warmer easier to turn inside and out.
  • Wash fabrics before using with food.
  • Separate tortillas before placing them in warmer.
  • Always monitor the tortilla warmer when placed in microwave.
