To discourage theft, the Garmin Nuvi 250 personal navigation device includes an antitheft feature: Nuvi 250 users can set the unit to lock. When locked, the device will not work until the proper secret code (or PIN, for personal identification number) is entered. In addition, Nuvi users can set the device to unlock only in a secured location. That secured location must be a place where the Garmin can receive adequate signals. Whenever the device is in the secured location, operating it will not require a PIN.

Enter your four-digit PIN to unlock the Nuvi. To do this, press the power button on the top of the Garmin Nuvi 250 and enter your four-digit PIN when prompted using the onscreen keyboard.
Take the Garmin 250 to the security location. If you selected a security location such as your home or office, take the Nuvi 250 to that location. Once the Garmin detects that it is in the security location, it will unlock.
Send the Garmin 250 back to Garmin to unlock it: If you can't remember the PIN or the security location, Garmin will have to unlock the device for you. Call Garmin Technical Support at: 1-800-800-1020 to get a return material authorisation number (RMA) and dock number.
