Build an attractive platform bed out of found materials. Look at home shops and nurseries for wood pallets that will form the base of the platform. Hinges and caster wheels, if you don't already have some, are gleaned from discarded furniture at your local tip or recycling centre.
Things you need
- 8 to 12 wood pallets, 1.2 by 1 m (48 inches by 40 inches)
- 10 to 17 large hinges
- 4 to 6 lockable caster wheels
- Paint or stain
Obtain eight wood pallets for a twin or double-sized platform bed or 12 for a queen or king platform bed. You will need ten large hinges for the twin-sized bed and seven additional hinges for the larger size. Check out your local tip for old cabinets you can glean the hinges from.
Use a power sander to carefully sand all surfaces of each pallet. Take your time and make sure that you get all the rough edges smoothed out. Paint or stain each pallet as desired.
Lay out the pallets in a formation, four long and two wide for a twin to double mattress or three wide for a queen to king mattress. Attach the pallets to each other in rows of two or three, depending on total size of the platform desired, using the hinges. Use more hinges to attach the rows to each other, forming the platform.
Screw lockable casters to the underside of the platform. The tip or recycling centre may have pieces of furniture that you can take the casters from if you don't have them handy. Use one caster at each corner for the small platform. Add one in the middle of each long side of the larger platform.
