Tote bags are commonly used as utility bags, often as reusable grocery bags or as a book bag. Tote bags are also one of the simplest bags to make when crocheting. When making tote bags, the type of yarn chosen determines what kind of tote you can create from it. An eco-friendly option is the use of recycled plastic bags as crochet yarn, which gives you a waterproof and sturdy tote.

Instructions

  1. 1

Crochet the front and back panels of the bag. Begin by doing 41 chain stitches and proceed with the following pattern:

First row - Make one single crochet stitch in the second chain stitch from hook. Make one single crochet stitch in each chain stitch until the end. Turn. Make 40 single crochet stitches.

Second row - Make one chain stitch and one single crochet stitch in each single crochet stitch across. Once the end has been reached, turn.

Repeat the last row until it measures 15 inches ending with a wrong side row. Fasten off.

Repeat all of the above to create the back panel.

  2. 2

Crochet the two side panels. Use the pattern for Step 1 until it measures up to 14 inches ending with a wrong side row. Do not fasten off; on the next row (right side), make 1 chain stitch and then make 1 single crochet stitch in each of the first 11 single crochet stitches. Make 4 chain stitches; miss the next 4 single crochet stitches. Make 1 single crochet stitch in each of the next 10 single crochet stitches. Make 4 chain stitches; miss the next 4 single crochet stitches. Make 1 single crochet stitch in each single crochet until the end of the row. Turn. In the next row, make 1 chain stitch; make a single crochet stitch in each of the first 11 single crochet. Make 4 single crochet stitches in the next chain 4 space. Make 1 single crochet in each of the next 10 single crochet stitches. Make 4 single crochet stitches in the next chain 4 space. Make 1 single crochet in each single crochet stitch until the end of row. Turn. Work another 2 rows in single crochet stitch and fasten off.

Repeat Step 2 to create the second side panel.

  3. 3

Arrange the four panels like a box with the side panels opposite each other. Join the panels together. Facing the wrong side of the panels, join 2 strands of yarn with a slip stitch at the top left corner. Make one chain stitch and working through both thicknesses, work 1 row of single stitch along the edge. Fasten off when finished and repeat for the remaining panels.

  4. 4

Create the base of the bag. Use the pattern for the front and back panels and repeat the last row until it measures 12 inches, ending with a wrong side row. Do not fasten off.

  5. 5

Attach the base to the panels. Place the lower edge of the joined panels behind the base with the wrong sides together and the right side of the base facing you. Align the corners of the base with the panel corners.

Make one chain stitch and working through both thicknesses, make 1 round of single stitch on all sides of the base. Join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet. Fasten off.

  6. 6

Create the top edging. With the right side facing you, join 2 strands of yarn with a slip stitch to any

corner of the top edge. Make one chain stitch. Working from left to right instead of right to left, do 1 round of reverse single crochet stitch evenly around the top edge. Join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet and then fasten off.

  7. 7

Make two handles. Using two strands of yarn, loosely make 95 chain stitches. Follow the pattern below:

First row - Make 1 single crochet in the second chain stitch from hook. Make 1 single crochet in each single crochet stitch across. Turn. Do 94 single crochet stitches.

Second row - Make 1 single crochet stitch. Create 1 single crochet in each single crochet across. Turn. Repeat last row once and fasten off.

With the right side of the bag facing you, push the ends of the handle through the slits of the side panel to the wrong side. Sew the ends together. Bring the halves of the handle together and using two strands of yarn, wrap it around the centre 4 inches wide. Fasten the ends.

Tips and warnings

  • To make a bag that is 12 inches wide, 15 inches high, and 12 inches deep, make sure the right crochet needle is used. A total of 13 1/2 single crochet stitches and 16 rows should be equal to 4 inches with 2 strands of yarn.
