How to Shred Potatoes

Updated April 17, 2017

Potatoes are a common ingredient in many recipes. One of the ways of preparing potatoes for a recipe such as hash browns is to shred the potatoes into thin ribbons. You can do this type of shredding with a small amount of physical exertion using a grating device, such as a cheese grater.

Place the potato on a flat surface and cut it in half using a kitchen knife. This will make the potato easier to handle while shredding it on the grater.

Rub the potato on the grating device. The metal rivets in the device will shred the potato into small thin pieces.

Cook the shredded potato right away or place the shredded potato in water to slow the oxidation process if you cannot use them right away.
