When you are filing a complaint against a home insurance company, you need to provide information relevant to your complaint, such as the policy number, the policyholder's name, the claim number, the coverage dates and the premium price of the home insurance policy. Information related to your home insurance policy is printed on your statement of benefits. State and private resources are available if you wish to file a complaint against your home insurance provider.

    Submit a consumer complaint with your state's Department of Insurance or Department of Finance and Insurance. Fill out a formal consumer complaint form with as much detailed information about your complaint as you can provide. Offer exact dates, the names of personnel with whom you've been in communication and a summary of the event(s) you are reporting.

    Provide copies of supporting documents such as claim forms and letters of refusal. Keep the originals for your records. Initialise all your documentation in case the pages of your complaint become separated. Sign and date your complaint form.

    Allow four weeks to six weeks for a response. If you do not receive a written response within this time period--or the one quoted--follow up with an inquiry letter or phone call, if permitted. Request a summary of the complaint's progress.

    Visit your state's Attorney General's website to file an online complaint or learn how you can submit a written complaint by mail. The Attorney General's Office can take action against insurance companies that engage in unlawful activities.

    File a consumer complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB collects and documents information on business reliability. Businesses are evaluated based on information provided by consumers. File an online complaint using the insurance company's business name and business address. Provide an account of the event(s) you are reporting.
