How to Tie a Hawaiian Blanket Into a Skirt

Hawaiian blankets are also known as Sarongs. Sarongs have been around for centuries, originating in the Asian countries such as Indonesia, but they have also been worn extensively throughout the Pacific Islands. This includes Hawaii. Sarongs come in several different patterns and can have tassels on the end. can be used as blankets but they can also be folded and tied into clothing like dresses, skirts, and shirts. You can use a full length sarong or a short sarong.

Instructions

Things you need

  • Long sarong
  • Short sarong
  • Safety pins

    Skirts

    Put the sarong around your back at the spot where the waistline is most comfortable and the sarong is not dragging the floor. Hold the two ends out and position them to the side or front where you want the knot to be. Cross the sides, with one side on top and the other underneath, and tie a knot.

    Put the sarong around your back and again, at the spot on your waist where it is most comfortable and the sarong is not dragging on the floor. Pull the ends out to the front of you and then cross the sides over until you are holding the open ends at your back. Tie the ends in a knot in the middle of your back.

    Put the sarong around your back and pull the loose ends to your front. Cross them over and pull them tight. Secure the ends with safety pins or by folding the outside end in between your skin and the inside layer.

    Dresses and Shirts

    Use a long sarong and pull it around your body so that your back is covered up to your arm pits and the front loose ends are in front of your body. Cross the loose ends over each other and twist the loose ends as tight or as loose as desired and tie them behind your neck. You can also use a short sarong with this method and make a shirt.

    Use a long sarong and pull it around your body so that your back is covered up to your arm pits and the front loose ends are in front of your body. Cross the loose ends over each other and place them over your shoulder. Have a partner twist them as loose or as tight as you want and safety pin the ends to the back of the sarong right next to your shoulders. You can also use a short sarong to make a shirt.

    Use a long sarong and pull it around your body so that your front is completely covered like with a strapless shirt. Have a partner pull the loose ends together so that one side is crossed over the other. Twist the loose ends and bring them over your shoulders. Secure to the front of the dress with safety pins.

    Make a strapless dress by using the same method described in step 3 of the skirts section. Once again, you can also use a short sarong to make a cute shirt with this same method.

Tips and warnings

  • If you feel uncomfortable with the sarong being open so much, you can wear something underneath the sarong, or close it a bit more with safety pins. These are just some examples. There are many more ways to tie sarongs into cute and fashionable styles.
