Making an envelope at home is easy using a square piece of paper. (envelope 1 image by jovica antoski from Fotolia.com)

If you run out of envelopes when you need one, you can create an envelope at home quickly, simply and inexpensively. All it takes is a square piece of paper, either pre-cut or cut into a square, by folding one corner over to the edge and trimming off the excess. These homemade envelopes can also allow you to get creative, using different coloured papers, markers and stickers you already own.

Instructions

  1. 1

Create a square with your paper if it is not already in that shape by folding one corner over to the opposite edge of the paper. Cut along the top edge of the triangle you just created; discard the excess rectangular piece or save for future use.

  2. 2

Unfold the triangle piece of paper you created in the previous step; you should now have a square piece of paper.

  3. 3

Rotate the square piece of paper so one of the corners faces you on your work surface.

  4. 4

Fold the bottom corner of the paper up so the point of the corner ends up slightly past the centre of the square.

  5. 5

Fold each of the side corners in toward the centre of the square so the edges line up with the previously-folded bottom corner.

  6. 6

Place a thin line of glue on the underside of the bottom edges of each of the folded sides, where they overlap the top sides of the folded-in bottom corner, and press to seal. Wipe away any excess glue and allow to dry.

  7. 7

Insert what you wish to enclose into the envelope then fold down the top corner of the envelope so the point of the top flap extends slightly below the point where the bottom and sides of the envelope are glued together.

  8. 8

Secure the top flap of your envelope with an additional dot of glue at the tip; you can also use tape or a sticker if you desire.

Tips and warnings

  • Place a piece of scrap paper into the envelope while the glue on the sides and bottom flaps dry in case any glue seeps out.
