Airsoft guns are realistic replicas of modern and historical firearms designed to fire small diameter plastic BB's. Airsoft guns use spring, gas and electric motors to propel the BB's from the gun. Airsoft games are often designed around historical themes such as World War II battles or more current conflicts. Typically equipped with blaze orange tips for safety, airsoft guns can be made to look more realistic by removing or covering the orange tip.

  1. 1

Remove any clips or magazines from the airsoft gun. Unload the gun completely. Point the muzzle of the gun in a safe direction and pull the trigger to release any spring compression or air that could cause injury while working on the gun. Remove the battery from an electric airsoft gun.

  2. 2

Remove the barrel from the gun, if possible, by following the manufacturer's directions for safe disassembly. Leave the barrel in place on the gun if you are not confident in its removal or if it cannot be removed.

  3. 3

Tape around the base of the blaze orange barrel where the orange tip meets the black barrel on the gun.

  4. 4

Wrap the tape down around the barrel and frame of the gun to provide protection from over spray when painting the orange blaze tip.

  5. 5

Hold the airsoft gun and spray the orange tip with paint. Choose a spray paint that will closely match the barrel or frame of the gun. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly and apply a second coat if desired.

  6. 6

Remove the painter's tape from the gun when the spray paint has dried for at least 1 hour.

Tips and warnings

  • With the blaze orange tip removed, the airsoft gun can take on a realistic appearance. Transport the gun in a secured gun case and consider the appearance of the gun when handling. Law enforcement could mistake the airsoft gun for the real thing, which could put your life in danger.
