Scabies is a tiny mite that burrows underneath the skin and causes itching and red dots. Scabies is highly contagious and removal of the mites from furniture is vital to getting the outbreak under control. Scabies mites can live off the human body for four days before dying. Once you have treated yourself and any family members, you must take care of the furniture when giving the house a thorough cleaning.

Instructions

  1. 1

Use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum living room furniture. Remove the seating cushions from couches and chairs and vacuum every inch of the fabric or other material. Place the cushions on a clean table after each one is clean. Vacuum the rest of the furniture getting into seams and down sides of chairs and couches. Every inch of the furniture should be vacuumed. This includes ottomans and tables in the living room.

  2. 2

Use the vacuum cleaner to clean dining room chairs and tables. Vacuum tables and wash with a hot soapy solution. Vacuum chairs that have fabric and use the soapy solution to wash hardwood chair seats.

  3. 3

Vacuum bedroom mattresses and any furniture in the bedroom such as chairs and vanity chairs. The mattress must be vacuumed on the top, underneath and on the sides. The mattress and box spring must be vacuumed. If the mattress is in a wood frame, the mattress and box spring must be removed to vacuum inside the frame. Vinyl waterbed mattresses can be vacuumed and washed with hot soapy solution. Pull the mattress back as far as you can to vacuum underneath the mattress in the wood frame.

  4. 4

Vacuum patio furniture that has been used during the time of the scabies outbreak. Although the furniture is outdoors, does not keep it free of the tiny scabies mites. After vacuuming the patio furniture that is made of vinyl cushions, use a hot soapy solution to wash the cushions.

  5. 5

Repeat step 1 to 4 for four days to ensure all mites and any hatching eggs are gone. If you develop another scabies outbreak during this time, you must keep cleaning for four days from the day you treat yourself and family.

Tips and warnings

  • Follow any treatment directions that the doctor gives you and keep every inch of the house clean and everything washed to prevent reinfecting people in the house.
  • If you feel that the reinfestation of scabies is coming from couch cushions or mattresses, place the items in a sealed plastic bag for two weeks to kill the scabies mites and eggs.
