How to Make Purple Paint

Updated February 21, 2017

In order to create a painting that has depth and interest, it is helpful to know how to properly combine different colours so that you will be able to use the entire spectrum. You can make all of the secondary colours by combining the three primary colours, which are red, yellow and blue. For example, by combining red and blue in a specific way, you can create purple paint that can be used in your artwork.

Squeeze a quarter-sized dollop of blue acrylic paint onto a palette.

Squeeze a quarter-sized dollop of red acrylic paint about 1 inch away from the blue paint on the palette.

Mix the two colours together in the centre of the palette using a paintbrush. This will create a medium purple paint.

Mix in a small amount of white acrylic paint to make the purple paint lighter.

Mix in a small amount of black acrylic paint to make the purple paint darker.
