How to Do Karaoke Shows With a PC

Karaoke is a form of musical entertainment often found in bars and other nightlife attractions. The premise is to allow people to sing along with their favorite songs with special karaoke tracks in the background. These special karaoke tracks sound just like the original song except that the original vocal tracks have been removed. Karaoke can be completely set up and run on a PC computer and output to a stereo and television set for a full karaoke experience.

Instructions

Things you need

  • Computer
  • Karaoke software
  • Karaoke song files
  • Patch cables
  • Stereo
  • Television
  • Microphone
  • Direct box
  1. 1

Download and install a free PC karaoke software program, such as KaraFun, PyKaraoke or vanBasco's Karaoke Player.

  2. 2

Download a collection of virtual karaoke files. Common karaoke file extensions include KAR, CDG and CDG, but many programs can also play MIDI, MP3 and WAV files as well. Home Musician, Free Karaoke and Karaoke Version are three websites that offer free karaoke downloads.

  3. 3

Use a 1/8-inch patch cable to run from the computer's audio output jack to the input or aux in jack on a stereo. Plug a microphone into a direct box or other form of mediary device that prevents directly plugging the mic into the computer. Use a 1/4-to-1/8 inch patch cord to connect the direct box into the computer sound card's input jack.

  4. 4

Run a RGB cord from the computer's video card output to the input jacks on a television screen. Play the karaoke song with the karaoke software. The karaoke software will output the words on the television screen and the audio through the stereo.
