Towels are a necessity in the bathroom for drying off after a shower or bath. They also provide a decorative note and splash of colour. Use plain towels for bathing. White works well because you can bleach out any stains. Use coloured towels on the racks. Towels are available in solids and prints, embellished with ribbons, appliques and borders. Towel racks are available in metal, wood, acrylic and other materials.

Instructions

  1. 1

Measure the towel rack. Fold a towel into thirds lengthwise and measure how wide it is across. Fold another towel in half and measure it. Now you can calculate how many towels you need to cover the rack and whether you should fold the towels in half or in thirds. For example if the rack is 36 inches wide, you would need two towels folded to 18 inches wide to cover the rack or three towels folded to 12 inches wide.

  2. 2

Wash and dry the towels to remove any creasing and to fluff up the fibres.

  3. 3

Fold the largest towels, usually bath towels, into thirds or halves. Lay the towel on a flat surface with the surface to be displayed face down. Fold one-third of the towel from the left over onto the towel. Fold one-third of the towel over from the right on top of the one-third from the left.

  4. 4

Fold the towels in half. Lay the towels face down on a flat surface. Fold one-quarter of the towel over from the left so it ends in the middle of the back of the towel. Fold one-quarter of the towel over from the right so it ends in the middle of the towel and is butted up against the left towel.

  5. 5

Hold the towel so the folds are toward you and the design is toward the wall. The decorative edge should be at the top of the towel. Slide the towel behind the towel rack. Bring the top edge over the towel rack until both ends, the end hanging over the front of the rack and the end at the back of the rack, are even at the bottom.

  6. 6

Place hand towels in a contrasting colour on top of the bath towels on the rack. Fold the hand towels in half as you did the bath towel. Top off with a wash cloth folded over the hand towel.

Tips and warnings

  • Contrast the colours of the towel or use various shades of the same colour.
  • Kitchen towels are hung using the same methods.
