Instructions

  1. 1

Soak up any areas that have wet spots, using paper towels. Press firmly or stand on the paper towels and use plenty of them to extract as much of the liquid as possible.

  2. 2

Fill the bucket with hot water. Squeeze several drops of a mild detergent into the water so it gets sudsy.

  3. 3

Dip a white cloth into the detergent solution and use it to sponge the really dirty areas of your carpet. This will help to lift the dirt from the carpet to the cloth.

  4. 4

Get a new white cloth and repeat the cleaning process from the previous step. Continue to do this until the cloth comes up white after pressing it into the carpet.

  5. 5

Pour some hydrogen peroxide onto a white cloth if there are any dirty areas that cannot be cleaned with the detergent solution. Carefully sponge these areas with the hydrogen peroxide, being careful not to get it anywhere but on the dirty area.

  6. 6

Rinse your carpet by dabbing it with a towel soaked in cold water. Use a dry towel to remove as much of the water as you can.

  7. 7

Allow your carpet to dry completely, which could take overnight, then vacuum the carpet in all directions to remove any additional debris.

Tips and warnings

  • If you need to clean a large carpeted area, you may need to rent a carpet shampooer, follow instructions on the carpet shampoo and repeat as needed.
