Criterion Games created "Burnout" first on PlayStation 2, Xbox and Game Cube. "Burnout Paradise" is the latest version as of 2010. The game sets up a racing world in a place called Paradise City, where cars are the main attractions. Gamers play events and do challenges to work toward higher points and "licenses." "Burnout Paradise" also became available for PC with an option to download the game directly from EA Store.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download a trial of "Burnout Paradise" PC version at the Criterion Games website. Once installed, try out "Burnout Paradise" to make sure it will work with your computer's specifications, then visit the EA Store online to buy a copy of "Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box on PC." You may also find this version at a games retailer near you.

  2. 2

Load the game until "Main Men" appears. Then click "Enter Paradise City." A cinematic starts explaining what Paradise City is and why it is the ideal location for burnout racing.

  3. 3

Watch the movie closely and listen for game play hints. The narrator shows different locations on a map and even explains your "Learner's Permit," before she goes into the game's objectives and different events.

  4. 4

Choose your face and select a car. The game tries to take a picture of you for your "Learner's Permit" but you can use the default shadow avatar instead until you get a picture. Then you will be able to pick a car.

  5. 5

Press "ESC" to bring up your "Driver's Details" screen and set up your keyboard controls. Press "F1" or "F2" until you see "Under the Hood," then select "Control Options." Select an action such as "Steer Left" or "Steer Right" and choose a key for controller input. Press "ESC" until you are back in the game.

  6. 6

Press the "UP" arrow key to begin driving or another key that you chose for your controller. Your car begins to move forward. As you begin, tutorials pop up to let you know how to drive or what actions (such as wrecking your car) cause you to gain or lose points.

  7. 7

Go back to the "Main Menu" by hitting "ESC" and choosing "Main Menu." Then choose "Start an Event." In the trial version, an event automatically starts for you.

  8. 8

Drift your car by tapping the brake and steering sharply to the left. Hit the gas and control your car as the vehicle moves to the side. Your boost meter rises and helps with cornering as you drive in the game.

  9. 9

Hit the emergency brake to spin your car. This action raises your boost meter and allows you to corner quickly. You can also use this method to quickly turn your car around.

  10. 10

Flatspin the car by pulling an emergency brake turn on the edge of a ramp at a medium to high speed. Find a ramp with a long drop, and hit it with a lighter car for bigger flatspins, which stack multipliers.

Tips and warnings

  • The map directs you to all the different locations in Paradise City. Be careful when looking at the map in high speeds since you may crash from not looking at the road.
  • Road signs direct you to turn left or right at the top of the screen.
  • Keep going straight if you receive no indicators.
  • Learn new routes at the end of each 8 Finish Points.
  • Drive out the world a few times in Paradise City to get a feel of the game.
