How to Make 3D Letters in Cards

Whether being made for a birthday, a holiday, or just a nice little thank you note, cards with 3D components are a refreshing surprise over the traditional two-dimensional card. Make your own homemade card even more special by popping your lettering off the page.

  • Card stock
  • Foam
  • Glue
  • Self-drying clay
  • Paint
  • Heavy book
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. 1

    Fold a piece of card stock in half. Decorate the outside of the card.

    Cut foam into the letters you want to pop out of the card. Plan where you want to have these letters and decorate the inside of the card.

  3. 3

    Cut a strip of card stock, about a quarter-inch wide and about 1 and 1/2 inches long. Cut a piece of card stock for each 3D letter. Fold the strip of card stock back and forth like an accordion at quarter-inch intervals.

    Glue one end of the accordion folded paper to the foam letter and the other end to the inside of the card. Close the card so that the accordion folding folds flat. Place a book on top while the glue dries.

    Open the card and your foam letters should jump off the page.

    Fold a piece of card stock in half. Decorate the front of the card.

    Open your card and squeeze your glue out to create your lettering on the inside of the card. Decorate as much of the inside of the card with glue lettering as you want.

    Leave the card open while the glue dries.

    Paint over top of the glue so that the letters stand out.

    Wait for the paint to dry on the glue before decorating the rest of the inside of the card.

    Fold a piece of card stock in half. Decorate the front of the card.

    Mold lettering out of the self-drying clay. Let the clay letters dry completely.

    Plan where you want to have these letters and decorate the rest of the inside of the card.

    Glue the clay lettering on the inside of the card. Leave the card open while the glue dries.
