How to do it yourself: a big gift box

Updated February 21, 2017

If you have a large gift that does not fit into a standard gift box, you may need to make your own. This is a fairly easy task if you have the right materials and a little patience. Decorate your gift box in a style that reflects the personality of the gift recipient. Be creative.

Visit your local big-box merchandise store or grocery store and ask for the largest box is has. This will be the base from which you will work to make your distinctive gift box.

Tape the box together using clear packing tape. Often stores break down the boxes, so it is likely that you will have to put the box back together.

Spread out a tarp on your lawn and place the taped box on the tarp. Spray paint your box with white spray paint, using sweeping motions moving from the bottom to the top of the box. Allow the paint to dry.

Fill the box with wrapping filler such as paper confetti. Place the gift on the filler. Tape the box shut.

Wrap with white wrapping paper and secure with tape.

Decorate the outside of the box with paint pens, glitter glue pens, makers and other embellishments. Be creative. Top with a bow or bows.
