Dust mites are microscopic insects that consume dead skin. The faecal matter and skin shells of dust mites are common ingredients in household dust, making mites a cause of allergies and asthma. While the easiest way to prevent dust mites is to encase your furniture, mattress and pillows in plastic sheeting, you can avoid that by spraying the areas with a homemade dust mite killer.

Pour 207 ml. of distilled water into a spray bottle. Add 28 ml of eucalyptus essential oil. Screw on the nozzle and shake the bottle to incorporate the mixture.

Spray your mattress and both sides of your pillows once a week with the eucalyptus oil mixture. Only spray them enough to make the surface damp. Allow the mattress and pillows to air-dry before you put sheets or pillow cases back on them.

Wash your sheets and pillow cases in the hottest cycle your washing machine has. During the rinse cycle, add eight drops of eucalyptus oil to kill any remaining dust mites.

Spray your upholstered furniture and carpets with the eucalyptus oil mixture once a week, as well. Vacuum both the furniture and carpets thoroughly once they dry.
