Boot up your computer, and then launch your Internet browser. Navigate to the Garmin GPSMAP 296 Updates & Downloads website, and select the GPSMAP 296 Software Version 5.80 page (see Resources). Plug a PC interface cable into your PC and connect it to your Garmin GPSMAP 296.
Click the "Download" link located on the top of the Garmin Updates & Downloads GPSMAP 296 Software Version 5.80 page. A dialogue box will appear, asking if you wish to save the GPSMAP296_580.exe file. Click the "Save File" button.
Click the "Save File" button on the new dialogue box that appears, asking where you want to save the file on your hard drive. For easy access, save the file onto your desktop. Allow the file to install onto your desktop.
Turn on your Garmin GPSMAP 296 GPS. Double-click on the file that you downloaded from the Garmin website in Steps 2 and 3. The file will open and provide you with instructions. These instructions evolve with each update for the Garmin GPSMAP 296, so be sure that you follow the current instructions, and do not perform actions for previous updates that you may have installed.
The Garmin GPSMAP 296 screen will read "Software Loading...." This process will take between one and 10 minutes. Upon completion, the Garmin GPSMAP 296 will reset and restart itself, ready for use.
