A mantel shelf can be a beautiful accent to your wall. Since mantel shelves are generally large and sturdy, you have many options for what to set on them. These shelves are a wonderful place to put candles, picture frames or books. Mounting a mantel shelf to a wall is a simple task once you have found the right spot for the shelf.

- 1/8-inch drill bit
- Finishing nails
Pull off the mounting board on the back of the mantel shelf.
Use a stud finder to locate the studs in your wall and mark them with a pencil. When securing the board to the wall, make sure the screws run through the studs. Position the mounting board horizontally on the wall. Use a level to make sure it is straight. Secure the board to the wall.
Place the hollow back of the shelf over the mounting board. Drill two pilot holes through the top of the shelf and into the mounting board, one on either end of the shelf.
Hammer in two finishing nails, one in each pilot hole, to secure the shelf to the mounting board.
