The task of matching ceramic tile floors with granite counter tops is a great problem to have. Granite is a strong, durable, aesthetically pleasing material for counters. While expensive, it can tolerate a host of various abuses and is virtually impossible to scratch. Ceramic floor tiles are just as strong, and quite resistant to abrasion, stains and heavy foot traffic. Because they both come in a range of shades, finding a matching pair isn't difficult.

  1. 1

Choose a shade of granite first. Since the granite will be the surface of your countertops and thus closer to your eyes, you're going to have closer contact with it than with the ceramic floor tiles. Granite comes in a variety of shades from warm, golden browns and spicy reds to brilliant blues, rich greens, deep plums and light pinks, as well as a host of hues in between.

  2. 2

Take a sample piece of your chosen granite with you when you start looking for ceramic tiles. Hold your piece of granite side by side with ceramic tile samples that you like to compare them accurately. If possible, try to do this outside in natural light, rather than the fluorescent light of the store.

  3. 3

Match the ceramic tiles with either the main colour of the granite sample or with the colour of the specks on the granite. No piece of granite is a single uniform colour. Thus, you can match the ceramic tiles with the focal colour of the granite, or use the tiles to bring out the colours in the tiny dots in the granite pattern. Either option is a suitable way to match them.
