An error in medication administration can be a lethal mistake. Intravenous medication administration sets can be difficult to set to a precise drip rate. The use of an IV infusion pump allows the administrator to set an exact medication delivery rate to ensure the proper amount of medication is being delivered. A study done by doctors at BYU determined that the use of IV pumps reduced the incidence of adverse drug reactions. The Braun IV pump has a large display and keypad for easy use. It is also equipped with an air-in-line detector to reduce the incidence of air emboli.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Inspect the pump looking for any damage to the user interface or cords. Wipe the machine with a cloth if you notice any dirt or fluid.

  2. 2

Turn the nob on an IV pole clockwise to attach the Braun IV Pump to an IV pole. The pump can also be placed on a flat surface that is higher than the patient's head.

  3. 3

Insert the power cord of the Braun IV Pump into an electrical socket.

  4. 4

Press the power key located on left side the pump's keypad. The power button can be identified by two small circles on the button. Once it has turned on, the machine will beep three times.

  5. 5

Look at the display screen. Make a note if there are any dead pixels. The alarm and infusion lights will both blink one time. The alarm light is indicated by a small bell symbol. The infusion light is indicated by a small drop symbol.

  6. 6

Prepare the infusion solution. Make sure you fill the drip chamber at least one-third of the way; and flush the administration line to eject the air. Close the clamp to protect the solution while you are preparing the pump.

  7. 7

Press the grey door-opening button located on top, right side of the Braun IV Pump. Pull the door open.

  8. 8

Push and hold the clamp at the top of the fluid path. Insert the administration tubing through the clamp; and release the clamp button. Continue threading the administration tubing through the inner roller clamp and the air-in-line detector located at the bottom of the pump.

  9. 9

Close the door of the pump. Open the roller clamp located on the administration line; no drops should be falling in the drip chamber. If drops are falling in the chamber, reopen the pump door and check the security of the administration line.

  10. 10

Select the mode of delivery, using the function button located directly below the display screen.

  11. 11

Enter the administration information, using the keypad.

  12. 12

Connect the tubing to the desired site.

  13. 13

Press start to begin the treatment.
