The HP 901 ink cartridge is compatible with the HP OfficeJet 4500 and 4600 series printers. There is both an HP 901 black ink cartridge and an HP 901 colour ink cartridge, which contains yellow, magenta and cyan. If you choose to refill these cartridges rather than replacing them, you'll need a refill kit with ink and syringes. Choose a work area with a non-porous surface that can tolerate any accidental spills.

Instructions

    Refill HP 901 Color Cartridge

  1. 1

Insert each syringe into a different ink bottle -- one for cyan, magenta and yellow. Fill each syringe with 5ml of ink.

  2. 2

Place the spent cartridge down on paper towels or newspaper. Rotate the cartridge so the label side is facing up, and the text on the label is right-side-up.

  3. 3

Peel the HP 901 colour cartridge label away from the face of the cartridge. Notice the five fill holes underneath the label. The fill hole at the top is connected to the yellow ink chamber. Directly underneath the yellow fill hole are two columns of fill holes -- one on the left and one on the right. The bottom-left fill hole is connected to the magenta ink chamber. The bottom-right fill hole is connected to the cyan chamber.

  4. 4

Cover up the magenta and cyan fill holes with a piece of tape. Inject 5ml of yellow ink into the top yellow fill hole. Wipe away any ink that escapes from the fill hole with a paper towel.

  5. 5

Cover both the yellow and cyan fill holes with tape. Inject the syringe with magenta ink into the bottom-left fill hole. Wipe away any excess ink with a paper towel.

  6. 6

Cover both the magenta and yellow ink holes with tape. Inject the cyan syringe into the bottom-right fill hole. Wipe away any excess ink with a paper towel.

  7. 7

Remove any tape from the fill holes.

  8. 8

Replace the cartridge in the printer. Don't replace the cartridge label. Run the HP printer through one to three cleaning cycles. Allow the refilled cartridge to sit in the printer unused for about eight hours before resuming normal printing.

    Refill HP 901 Black Cartridge

  1. 1

Insert the tip of the syringe into the refill ink bottle and fill the syringe with 8ml of ink.

  2. 2

Place the cartridge down on paper towels or newspaper. Rotate the cartridge so the label side is facing up, and the text on the label is right-side-up.

  3. 3

Peel the HP 901 label away from the face of the cartridge. Notice the six fill holes underneath the label. There are two fill holes, horizontal to each other, at the top of the cartridge, and one single hole in the middle, with two fill holes below it.

  4. 4

Inject ink slowly into any middle fill hole.

  5. 5

Replace the cartridge in the printer. Don't replace the cartridge label. Run the HP printer through one to three cleaning cycles. Allow the refilled cartridge to sit in the printer unused for about eight hours before resuming normal printing.
