Some natural pet products on the market contain citrus ingredients to repel and kill pests. Orange and lemon pills smell nice -- certainly nicer than other insecticides -- and are safe for your family and pets. If you'd like to avoid spraying your home with toxic chemicals, try making a simple, homemade flea spray with citrus peels and water.

  1. 1

Boil five orange or lemon peels in a pot with four or five cups of water until the peels become soft.

  2. 2

Take the pot off the stove and allow it to cool completely.

  3. 3

Liquefy your peel and water solution in a blender.

  4. 4

Using a piece of cheesecloth, strain the solution into a glass jar.

  5. 5

Funnel about half of the solution into a spray bottle.

  6. 6

Pour the orange peel water on your pet after a bath.

  7. 7

Spray the solution throughout your home wherever fleas are a problem.

  8. 8

Spray again after four weeks, to eliminate any additional fleas that may have hatched.
