Ventrilo is an application that allows you to chat with friends online using a microphone and headset. Ventrilo, often shortened to Vent, is commonly used in World of Warcraft so that players can strategise and communicate with others. Inappropriate behaviour can lead to being banned on Ventrilo. If this happens, you can bypass the ban using Tor, a program that can keep your identity anonymous online.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Use a different browser than the one you were banned from Ventrilo on; for example, if you were using Internet Explorer when you were banned, switch to Firefox.

  2. 2

Visit (see Resources) and download Tor. This will provide a proxy server, which hides your IP address.

  3. 3

Buy a membership if Tor requires it; this will allow you unlimited access while browsing on the Internet to ensure total anonymity.

  4. 4

Use the proxy server from Tor as your only login to Ventrilo; this means you must only use the browser you downloaded Tor with. Clear your cookies from your browser periodically to prevent Vent from detecting your IP address.

Tips and warnings

  • Tor helps deter hackers and threats to your system.
  • Do not use Tor to view illegal content online.
