The Vitamix Corporation contends that its line of food-blending products is the result of 50 years of research and development in manufacturing technology. The company backs that up with a seven-year warranty for parts and labour in the event of machine failure. Given a lifetime of puréeing fruits and vegetables, kneading dough, frappeing coffee and preparing hot soup, your Vitamix machine will take a lot of abuse. Follow these tips for day-to-day fixes of common issues when using a Vitamix Professional Series 500 blender.

If the motor shuts off automatically, this is the Automatic Overload Protection feature of the Vitamix, which prevents the machine from overheating. If this happens, turn the power switch to "Off" for up to 45 minutes to reset it. Reset times will vary depending on the temperature of the room. To shorten reset time, unplug the machine and take out the container, using a hair dryer on the cool setting to blow air onto the bottom-centre section of the container.
If the Vitamix leaks, this may be because the blade assembly shifted from position when the retainer nut was being tightened to secure it to the bottom of the container. First check that the container doesn't leak by placing a small amount of water into the container. If it does leak, you may need to remove or replace the blade assembly and retighten the retainer nut with a special wrench, which you can purchase from Vitamix customer service.
If the blade does not grind grain well, this is most likely because you are using a wet blade, which is your general all-purpose blade that is more suitable to blending wet ingredients. Use a dry blade instead, which is an accessory purchased separately. However, note that the dry blade is for use only in 907gr containers, not 1814gr containers. Also, dry blades will not process wet foods well. When using a dry blade with dry material, do not grind for more than two minutes, as doing so can mar the container and wear down the blades.
If the container becomes marred, cloudy or discoloured, this may be because of the ingredients you are using. Certain herbs and spices will cause the container to change colour or crack, and may release volatile components that affect the flavour of other foods. If you frequently grind herbs and spices, consider purchasing a separate container for these spices as well as any dry blade attachments to grind them. Replace blades as needed.
If the mixture does not circulate, this is probably due to a trapped air bubble. Use the tamper through the lid to release the bubble, holding the tamper at an angle rather than straight down if necessary to free the mixture. (Do not use the tamper for more than 30 consecutive seconds to avoid overheating.) If the tamper does not work to circulate the mixture, try reducing the speed. Once the food circulates, increase the speed and proceed processing.
If the mixture splashes, you may be starting the Vitamix at too high a speed. With hot mixtures and full containers in particular, adjust the speed setting to "Variable" to start, then bring up to high speed. To prevent possible splashing, lightly rest your hand on the lid when turning the motor on (except in the case of hot liquids). Be sure to lock the lid so that expansion does not blow the lid off during operation.
Tips and warnings
- Keep hands and utensils out of the container when the motor is running to prevent injury and/or machine damage. Use a rubber spatula instead, but only when the motor is not running. Otherwise, use the tamper to push food down, making sure the main lid remains attached.
- Do not operate with a damaged cord or plug, or if the machine has been dropped or damaged. Contact Vitamix customer service and ask for a return authorisation number before you ship the damaged item for repair.
- Do not use attachments that are not recommended by Vitamix. These could void the warranty.
- Do not let the machine or power cord touch hot surfaces.
