If you have old slides, you can use a scanner to convert the slides to digital images that you can save to your computer. To scan slides using an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Scanner, you need to connect the device to your computer and install the Epson scanning software that came with the scanner.
Turn the Epson scanner off. Open the scanner cover and slide the document mat up and off the scanner cover.
Connect the film adaptor cable of the built-in transparency unit on the scanner cover to the transparency unit port on the scanner.
Turn the scanner on and connect it to the computer. The computer will automatically recognise the scanner.
Place the slide holder on the scanner, and place the slides in the holder with the "This side to lamp" indicator facing down. Position the holder so that the small white triangle on the upper-right corner of the holder points directly to the upper-right corner of the scanner.
Close the scanner over, and press the "Start" button. The Epson Smart Panel window will open.
Click the icon for "Scan and Save." This scans the slide and opens the "View Image" screen.
Click the "Next" button, and click the "Folder" icon and navigate to a location on your hard drive to save the image. Click the drop-down box under "File Format" and select "Positive Film." Click the "Save" button.
The Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Scanner is a discontinued product. If you purchase a new or previously used scanner from another source, ensure that you have all necessary parts and CDs to connect the scanner to your computer and install the necessary software (see Resources).
