BlueChart maps are electronic marine navigation charts published by Garmin. Owners of compatible Garmin GPS devices can purchase BlueChart maps detailing a specific area of the country. However, before the purchased map can be loaded and used, it must be unlocked. Two codes, included with legitimate Garmin software purchases, must be entered to complete this unlocking process. Garmin's MapSource computer software checks these codes to ensure that the maps are properly licensed, and that users are not using pirated versions of the software.

Instructions

  1. 1

Locate the unique product unlock code, which is included with new copies of the BlueChart software. This code is listed in the Garmin device documentation, or with the BlueChart installation disk. The code is used to ensure that only legitimate paying customers can access the software.

  2. 2

Launch the Garmin MapSource computer software and click the "Utilities" menu. Select "Manage Map Products." When the dialogue box appears, click "Unlock Regions," and then "Add." Enter the unlock code from the Garmin documentation paper, and click "OK."

  3. 3

Connect the Garmin GPS to the computer using the Garmin USB connection cable. Click "Find Devices." Wait for the Garmin to be detected. When prompted, enter the coupon code. This is listed on the documentation paper and is different than the unlock code. Click "Unlock Map." The software will verify the codes and unlock the mapping software.
