Fax machines have been a popular way to send messages since the 1970s. Originally designed to transmit documents over analogue telephone lines, telecommunications advances now allow for faxes to be sent digitally through an Internet connection with SIP, which stands for Session Initiation Protocol and is the preferred protocol of choice for signalling by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communications. VoIP is a service that uses an Internet connection to perform a wide range of telephone activities from simple person-to-person phone calls to web page click-to-dial. SIP establishes sessions in an Internet provider's network that makes these services possible.

Instructions

  1. 1

Check to see if your SIP supports T.38. T.38 is a protocol that allows for real time faxing. Contact your VoIP provider to find out if T.38 is supported.

  2. 2

Confirm the fax machine is connected to your VoIP system. Look for a telephone line that connects the fax machine to a phone port on the VoIP modem.

  3. 3

Load the material you would like to fax into the fax machine.

  4. 4

Dial the number for where you would like to have the fax sent.

  5. 5

    Press send.

Check to see if your SIP supports T.38. T.38 is a protocol that allows for real time faxing. Contact your VoIP provider to find out if T.38 is supported.

  2. 2

Download a fax application for VoIP. A fax application simplifies the process by automatically configuring the technical computer and VoIP service settings to facilitate faxing without user assistance. You will still use your computer's default fax program to send the fax. There are several options for applications that can be found on the Internet through search engines. The website Voip-Info.org provides a list of such applications to download (see References).

  3. 3

Open the computer's default fax program, such as Microsoft Fax. Fax programs are standard on most computers. To find your fax program, click the "Start" button. From the list of options click "All Programs" and then "Windows Fax and Scan." If you have purchased a different fax program, you will find it listed under "All Programs."

  4. 4

Click "New Fax" and a guided process for sending a fax will begin. This is standard regardless of what type of fax program is being used.
