A GPS or global positioning system allows you to track a person or vehicle using a mobile phone combined with a software program. This will give you the target's speed, longitude, latitude and direction. This only takes about 15 minutes to set up and you can use a computer or any other Internet-enabled device to get the location of whatever you are tracking. This is useful for keeping track of friends, family or employees.

  1. 1

Get a mobile phone with access to the Internet. You can get one with a standard monthly contract or one with prepaid service.

  2. 2

Sign up for an unlimited data plan if you are planning to use the GPS tracking often.

  3. 3

Choose a GPS tracking software. Free options include AmazeGPS, Mologogo and Instamapper. These will turn your phone into a GPS tracking device.

  4. 4

Register for the program that you have chosen by filling in your user name, password, cell phone number, and e-mail address. You will receive a confirmation e-mail and text message.

  5. 5

Open the text message or e-mail using your mobile phone and click on the link in the message. This takes you to a page where you can download the software. Install it on your phone by clicking on the file. Once it has finished installing, restart your phone.

  6. 6

Click "Menu" and choose "Applications." Open up the GPS program. The application will start sending the location of the phone to the Internet, where it can be tracked.

  7. 7

Log on to the website where you registered. A map will appear with the GPS coordinates of the phone on it. You will also see the speed, if it is moving, and the general direction. You can now track it anywhere it goes as long as the program is turned on. Note that you will not be able to track someone without their knowledge because the application tells the phone user that it is on.
