How to Be a Model Over 40

When most people think of models, they think of youth and health. This comes as no surprise, as statistics show the average runway model is between the ages of 17 and 19. Though it can certainly be more challenging to attain work as a model over the age of 40, you can improve your chances by maintaining your body and skin and marketing yourself properly.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Eat right. Your body is your product, so you need to eat healthy, nutritious foods -- which means basing your meals around fresh fruits and vegetables. When you reach 40, your body begins burning calories less effectively as its metabolism starts to slow; therefore the older you are, the more vital it is to stick to a stricter diet than when you were 20 or 30.

  2. 2

Exercise. The older you are, the harder it can be to stay fit and maintain a healthy, toned figure. Your metabolic rate decreases when you reach the age of 40. You may find you have to exercise twice as much just to maintain your weight.

  3. 3

Rub anti-ageing skin cream on your face every night before going to bed. Create an effective skin care regime and follow it strictly. As you age, your skin begins to sag and show fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of ageing. To fight the signs of ageing you can rely on anti ageing skin care products and abide by basic skin care rules: wash off all make-up before going to bed; stay out of the sun; and avoid unhealthy habits like smoking, which can cause premature ageing.

  4. 4

Look for catalogue work. Runway modelling can be the hardest area to find work, and the career of a runway model is often over before she even turns 20. As a 40-plus model, you have better chances of staying in the industry and getting hired for jobs if you apply to model for catalogues.

  5. 5

Hire a talent agent. Having someone with experience search for age-appropriate work significantly heightens your chances of getting hired. If you are over the age of 40, you probably have enough on your plate. Taking care of your partner, children, career and other obligations can leave you with little spare time to spend searching for modelling work.
