How to Upgrade Apple TV Memory
Get more memory to enjoy more Apple TV (tv control and tv 3 image by chrisharvey from Fotolia.com)

Apple TV hardware does not arrive easily configurable. Opening the case and attempting to add more memory -- while possible for the expert or professional -- can void your warranty and risks damage to your device. Often, the best way to increase Apple TV memory capacity is to utilise external storage on your computer, or stream online media directly through the device with some creative workarounds.

Instructions

  1. 1

Visit MyService online (see Resources) to determine the level of service you need. The original Apple TV comes with up to 160GB of storage space, but MyService can upgrade to 320GB for about £182, including shipping.

  2. 2

Click the "Add to cart" button next to the memory upgrade you require.

  3. 3

Click the "Next Step" button and then enter "Just upgrade my hard drive" in the comments field. Click "Next Step" again to fill in your shipping information and pay for your order.

  4. 4

Check your e-mail for a prepaid shipping label. Put your AppleTV in a box and drop it off at any UPS location. Your device will be upgraded and returned within a few days. This will physically upgrade your memory capacity. For a more creative workaround, you can use existing devices to store and stream video for you.

  1. 1

Download ATVUSB-Creator onto your Mac. Note that this exercise requires a Mac and cannot be done on Windows. The ATVUSB-Creator will install a program called "Boxee" on your Apple TV that allows you to increase storage capacity by streaming video from any network computer or online service, such as Hulu.

  2. 2

Insert a flash memory drive, ensuring it's a "bootable" drive that can be formatted. If the packaging doesn't specify, you can ask an Apple Store representative for ideas or Google your specific model.

  3. 3

Begin running the ATVUSB-Creator you downloaded. You'll also need to provide your Apple TV version number. If you don't know it, it can be found in iTunes under the Apple TV menu. Select "Boxee for Mac" in the drop-down menu, and then hit the "Create Using" button, being sure the target directory is the installed flash drive.

  4. 4

Remove the flash drive and plug it into the Apple TV device. Then turn your Apple TV on to begin the boot-up process. Once completed, find "Boxee" in the menu and select it to install.

  5. 5

Restart the Apple TV and begin using Boxee to stream video from online sources or from other computers.

Tips and warnings

  • Opening your Apple TV, even by a professional, voids Apple warranties. Be aware of the risks of modifying your hardware.
