Established in 2002, WhiteSmoke has several products designed to help computer users with their writing including the WhiteSmoke Writer, Translator and Assistant. The free WhiteSmoke Grammar Checker is available on WhiteSmoke's website along with its other products. The Grammar Checker analyses your text for grammar usage errors and gives suggestions for improvement. Be aware that when you download WhiteSmoke, the installer may also download many programs unasked for such as "Improve your PC" and "My Fun Cards."

Skill level:

  1. 1

Go to the WhiteSmoke website and navigate to the grammar checker page. WhiteSmoke has several products in addition to the grammar checker program, including a writer program that includes the grammar checker along with a dictionary and thesaurus. Click on the green "Free Download" button toward the bottom of the page.

  2. 2

Download the software by reading the software agreement and clicking "I accept" at the bottom of the prompt window. You will have several more prompts to read before the download is complete. The software asks you to add items to your toolbar and taskbar as well as other downloads.

  3. 3

Type your e-mail address at the next prompt to activate the software. The software installs, then opens ready for use. Type in the program or paste text into the open window to check for spelling and grammar errors.

Tips and warnings

  • To uninstall the trial version, click on "Start," "All Programs" and "WhiteSmoke." Click "Uninstall WhiteSmoke" to remove the trial version from your computer. This will not rid you of the entire program. You will still need to run a malware tool such as MalwareBytes to remove other parts of the program from your computer.
  • During installation the software downloads browser toolbars and changes the browser home page. While the installation program prompts ask you if you want to do this, even if you click "No" the software may change and add these and other software to your hard drive. In order to check spelling and grammar, the software needs to connect to the Internet, making the trial version difficult to work with. Once the software is downloaded, you will get multiple pop-up ads relating information about upgrading to the full-version of the product. While the software does check some grammar issues, it has issues with comma splices and made odd suggestions in places where no grammar problem existed. Do not opt into any of the informational ads. The informational ads may contain spyware, viruses or Trojans that can damage your computer system.
