Bumper plates are a type of free weight used in competitive lifting. These may be made of solid rubber or may be metal coated in rubber. Because they are either made of rubber--or coated in it--bumper plates will not damage floors the way that metal plates can. Bumper plates can also look impressive in competitions. Many lifters buy their bumper plates already made but you can also make your own using old tires and free weights.

- 2 5-pound weights
- 8 sets of nuts and bolts
- Weight collars
Obtain old tires from a junk yard or garage.
Drill four holes in each weight to match up with those on the tire rims.
Fasten the weights to the tire by inserting bolts through holes in weights and rims and tightening the nuts with the wrench.
Slide the tires and weights onto the bar and fasten with weight collars.
Adjust weights until they feel stable. This may mean turning the tire on the bar so that the weights are on the outside or on the inside or drilling extra holes for nuts and bolts to better fasten the weights to the tires.
